We went to Shenzhen for the first time today and had a great trip, bought lots of quality items and had a very good time.
I was very nervous about shopping in Shenzhen and after reading some of the stories here was concerned about being ripped off.
From my experience, the sales people are very aggressive and being followed is a matter of course. Ignore them is my only advice!
The shops sell their own products, BUT have access to all the brand name rip offs. They will show you catalogue after catalogue of different products (such as ladies bags, wallets, shoes, etc.) and then, if interested they will immediately source the product from the warehouses. (Also remember there are 3 types of copies and they all have different prices ranges and quality).
The warehouses are located within the centre or across the road. But these warehouses are hidden from the authorities (somehow) and they, via runners (or delivery boys) immediately bring the product (which are always fakes) to the shop. All the shops pay the same price to the warehouses so obviously it is the job of the individual shops to re-sell it to you the customer, at the highest price. They will start at the most ridiculous price, in the hope that you the buyer has no clue to what the "fair" price is. If you are there be prepared to barter hard (like 25% of what they start at) and be also be prepared to walkaway if necessary. Certainly never pay more than half of their starting price!
While it is true that there are some stores that will cheat you with all your money there are some really great and amazing people that truly help you with everything you need. He takes care of all the finding the right shops, advises on bartering and stops you being followed. Shop without the worries. Lu assisted us with some great items and very good prices.
